The first step in treating abscesses is preventing their occurrence. Prevention includes maintaining good personal hygiene with frequent hand washing and washing the body with soap and water.

It is also important to see a licensed medical provider for any deep puncture wounds, severe burns, human or animal bites or wounds or lacerations that may have debris or a foreign body in them. This is especially vital for people who are at risk for developing an abscess. People at risk include those with such diseases as HIV/AIDS, combined immunodeficiencies, diabetes, cancer, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. People who take certain medications, such as corticosteroids or chemotherapy, which suppress the body's natural immune response, are also at risk for contracting an abscess.

Treatment of an abscess generally includes lancing or incising the abscess and draining the accumulated pus. Treatment may require major surgery for internal abscesses, such as an abdominal abscess.

Abscesses that are caused by a bacterial infection are treated with antibiotics. Antibiotics work by killing the harmful bacteria or by stopping them from reproducing and spreading. Different types of antibiotics are effective for treating specific types of bacteria. General types of antibiotics include penicillins, cephalosporins, tetracyclines, and aminoglycosides. The specific type of antibiotic that is used is chosen based on the results of a culture and sensitivity test performed on the abscess.

Treatment of abscesses generally also includes rest, increased fluids, and good nutrition. Serious or internal abscesses require hospitalization and intensive care, especially if complications occur.
