Apply an over-the-counter topical treatment that contains hydrocortisone to alleviate the itching often caused by hemorrhoids. Many of these treatments also contain a mild anesthetic that helps diminish the pain of hemorrhoids. However, don't use a hydrocortisone cream for more than a week, as it can have negative effects on the skin. Pick up some witch hazel wipes to provide a sensation of relief. Make sure they don't contain alcohol, though, since it can dry out the area. You can also take over-the-counter pain relievers to deal with pain.
